Social norms and institutions affect the behavior of people, and this is why behavioral change requires an understanding of the underlying factors that influence human nature. The environment, the resources available to us, and our attitude are all key factors that influence our decisions. The following sections explore the role of community in our lives. They also outline some important concepts for understanding the behavioral changes that occur in communities and how they are affected by social norms and institutions.
The degree to which a community influences you depends on your values and self-awareness. Sometimes, individuals resist their own social identities and are guided by their sense of right and wrong. But no matter which social milieu a person inhabits, he or she is still influenced by societal norms and values. In the quest to fit in or avoid rejection or ostracism, we do many things to fit in with a group or to avoid being outcasts.
Having a strong sense of community makes us feel more rooted and resilient. Our community is a safe place to be. When intruders break into our homes, we immediately call the police. When strangers are living in our neighborhood, we tend to become more protective of our neighbors and their children. Having a sense of community means we feel that our lives are better and we will do more for our community.
