The WHO issued the official name of COVID-19 on 11 February 2020. This is not a new virus, but an existing one: SARS-CoV-2. The WHO, CDC and other health organizations are very careful in naming viruses. The WHO has strict guidelines for naming a new virus to ensure that it is named after the place where it was first discovered, and to avoid confusion with any other viruses. These guidelines are in place to protect public health.
